Overview
Waraba, the newly named region formerly known as Caboolture West – is set to become a thriving regional hub, with major infrastructure works underway to support its rapid transformation. One of the cornerstone developments in the area is Stockland’s Rivermont, a masterplanned community set to deliver more than 2,000 new homes.
As part of the community upgrade, Unity Water is planning and implementing infrastructure for water supply and sewerage networks to service the growing population.
The Volvo ECR355E proved ideal for large-scale earthmoving in spatially restricted suburban environments. Its short radius design enabled heavy-duty excavation with minimal impact on surrounding traffic and infrastructure, making it a top choice for urban utility and road upgrade projects.

Challenge
Operating in a tight suburban setting required precise planning to manage limited space, maintain emergency access, and comply with traffic and noise regulations – all while using large-capacity machinery to move high volumes of material, avoid underground utilities, and navigate overhead obstacles.

Solution
To navigate the tight conditions of suburban streets without compromising performance, the Volvo ECR355E short radius excavator was deployed – offering full-size power with a compact footprint.

Machine Highlights
Optimised for Confined Spaces
The reduced tail swing design allowed the machine to operate entirely within the designated work zone (dead lane), eliminating any risk of encroachment into live traffic lanes. This key feature enabled safe and continuous operation without the need for extensive lane closures or major detours – a critical factor in maintaining access for residents and emergency vehicles.
Heavy Lifting in a Compact Form
Despite its compact design, the 38 tonne ECR355E delivered exceptional lift and carry capabilities. It comfortably managed heavy trench shields and large-diameter stormwater pipes (both precast concrete and poly), significantly reducing the need for additional support machinery on site.
Powerful Performance, Minimal Disruption
Purpose-built for high-density environments, the ECR355E provided the full power of a standard excavator while operating safely between existing structures and services. Its ability to work efficiently within narrow corridors helped avoid clashes with underground utilities and overhead constraints – all while staying compliant with local regulations around noise and traffic flow.
